“Comodo Cleaning Essentials (CCE) is a set of computer security tools designed to help users identify and remove malware and unsafe processes from infected computers”.
This “must have” utility is basically a portable malware, rootkits or other harmful processes from Windows Computers. Make no confusion, this is no anti virus to install and will be installed running on background. There is no “install” on this application, hence “portable”. You can put it on a USB key and run it on a infected computer to clean it. Now the key points of this application, is that is very effective removing malware and rootkits that most anti virus won’t be able to remove (the kind that install on hard drive master boot record (MBR).

Now, this is basically what this little piece of software does, also two useful extras which are:
- A KillSwitch, an advanced system monitoring tool that allows users to identify, monitor and stop potentially unsafe processes that are running on endpoint systems. Uniquely for a product of its type, KillSwitch leverages Comodo's huge whitelist database to isolate untrusted processes with an extremely high degree of accuracy – improving IT operational efficiency by reducing false positives and cutting the amount of time spent troubleshooting an endpoint machine.
- Malware Scanner, fully featured malware scanner capable of unearthing and removing viruses, rootkits, hidden files and malicious registry keys hidden deep within a system. The scanner is highly configurable, uses the latest heuristic techniques to detect previously unknown viruses, features first-class malware removal capabilities and is capable of detecting hidden drivers and services loaded during system start-up.
Now, once you download the 32bit / 64bit version and unzip it, opening CCE.EXE, you’ll be presented with the following screen:
The “Smart Scan” is sort of a faster scanner, which will scan the obvious parts where malware, rootkits and unsafe objects will mostly likely to be found (memory, critical areas and boot sector, etc..). The full scan, will scan everything (memory, critical areas and boot sector, hidden registry objects and services, hidden files and folders and the file system). The Custom Scan, well, will allow you select what you want to scan.
In this review, I checked the Smart Scan. When you pick “any” of the options, the first thing the software will do, is update signature database.
Then, will proceed to the scan itself!
After about 10 minutes, the scan was completed, asking me to reboot in order to scan for hidden services (and probably any other process that loads on boot and hides itself after it).
After that, a popup appeared saying that the scan was completed and no malware / rootkit was found. Seems like my system is clean :) which I didn’t expect otherwise because I always use protection and common sense to don’t get infected ;-)
So this is a pretty handy utility to be used on a system in need of scan and rescue, and has a utility that not most AV’s today use, which is rootkit detection, and this evil ones are dangerous since they camouflage themselves and can be awfully dangerous, most botnets exists due this kind of infections. Handy tool, free of use, recommended!
