Okay so today I’ll be reviewing a Chat client which supports several protocols. Why did I pick this client? Simple. It’s light, simple to use, supports various messenger protocols, has lot’s of plugins and its straightforward to what it’s supposed to do.
Pidgin supports the following chat protocols:
- AIM
- Google Talk
- IRC
- MySpaceIM
- SameTime
- Zephyr
- Bonjour
- Groupwise
- MSN (from the current Live Messenger)
- SILC
- XMPP (which is the one Facebook uses, so yes, you can configure your Facebook account on Pidgin and talk to your friends using it).
- Gadu-Gadu
- ICQ (not sure if there’s still a lot of users but hey!)
- XMiT
- Simple
- Yahoo
The installation is pretty simple, not much to say there, except pay attention to what you want to install, you can personalize the protocols which you want to be supported here.
Once you get it installed, you’ll be configuring the accounts you want to use with Pidgin:
Once you click “Add”, you’ll have a screen which allow you to select what protocol you want to use, I’ll be focusing on MSN here just for the sake of showing of
Just select “MSN” and insert your MSN credentials (MSN Email, password and Alias (which is the name your friends will see you on their buddy list).
And you’re set! You can add another account (facebook for example) using the same method, you can add as many accounts as you like and talk with your AIM, MSN, Facebook, ICQ buddies, all from the same client! :-) Here’s what will look like:
It looks pretty simple, doesn’t it? It will also display in separate services once you add more services to it.
You can also personalize the way it looks and add a ton of plugins to make it look and behave the way you want.
You can check the plugins here
