A new “must-have”. Everyone knows CCleaner, a neat, simple, small yet effective system maintenance tool, too clean temporary files (web browser cache files that works with Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer), cleans temporary installation files, uninstaller (which calls up the uninstaller of the application, and then sweeps the system looking for traces left behind), and has a nice Registry Cleaner, to wipe the windows registry with invalid entries. Now, I will eventually review CCleaner, but this utility called my attention by the simple fact that after running CCleaner, I ran this utility and picked up some more garbage and was able to go a little more further in getting junk files. Hence, I decided to review it. Glary Utilities is like a mix between CCleaner and TuneUp Utilities, it even has OneClick maintenance.
Glary Utilities Free, has the following functionalities:
- CleanUp & Repair: Disk Cleaner, removes temporary internet files and temporary installation files, registry cleaner (cleans up the registry of un-used traces of left-overs applications and other stuff), shortcut fixer (corrects errors in the start-up menu and desktop shortcuts), Uninstaller Manager, which uninstall programs and cleans left-overs.
- Optimize & Improve: Startup manager: Manages programs which automatically start with windows. Memory Optimizer: Monitors and optimizes memory, cleaning it from programs and files that are stored in memory and not running in background. Context Menu Manager: Manages the context menu entries for files & folders. Registry defrag: Re-organizes the registry (defrags it) in order to speed up every application that uses the registry to run.
- Privacy & Security: Erases all the traces of browsing, cookies, internet temporary files and history. It has a file shredder to well, erm, shred files :b (usually this works by deleting a file and overwriting the sectors with 0’s and 1’s), quick and effective file undeleter (in case you just deleted accidently a file). File Encrypter and Decrypter, which encrypts and decrypts files with a password.
- Files & Folders: Process manager, monitors the processes running on your PC and stop spyware and trojans (since this isn’t exactly a anti-spyware or anything like that, you’ll have to recognize the process to do so), Internet Explorer Add-ons manager, and providers an interface to Windows built-in utilities.
Now enough of babbling and let’s see it in action.
1 – One Click Maintenance Tab, where you can run all the maintenance actions with one click (I have just scanned it so at the moment it seems to be “cleaned”).
2 – Module Browser, where you can run the tasks and explore the functions tab by tab:
3 – Optimize and Improve tab:
4 – Privacy and Security:
5 – Files & Folders:
6 – And the last tab, System Tools:
Well, I could put prints of the sub-functions (process manager, startup manager) but then there would be a ton of pictures here and the idea is inserting pictures is to give an idea what the application looks like. However, I checked it myself, and this program does what it should and does it well. The Process Manager isn’t just another task manager, you have some more detailed information, same goes for the startup manager.
This is a handy utility which I’m considering replacing CCleaner, just for the fact that while reviewing and using it for a couple of weeks, has been shown to be more effective removing junk files and cleaning up the registry, and also has some more features to play with :-)
There’s a “Pro” version with a lot of more features, but for a freeware, ad-free, this is something to have, use, and re-use, because it works, it’s simple, it’s useful and hey, it’s free! Check out for yourself and tell me what you think of it.
