VLC Player–Play any video format without needing additional codecs!

It’s been out there for a while, if you haven’t at least heard of it, you’re living under a rock (no offense – non taken).

What’s VLC Player then? Well, it’s a lightweight, versatile, simple interface, nothing fancy about it (and that is a +1 here), keeps the interface tidy and simple, fast, and what can I say more.. Oh yeah, the main thing, it plays literally *any* video format. Let’s have a look into what exactly supports:

  • DVD,CD’s, VCD’s, Blu-ray, webcams and streams.
  • Plays almost all codecs without needing additional codec pack, like MPEG-2, H.264, MPEG-4, WebM, WMV.
  • It supports ALL Files. I mean, literally all files. And I mean it. MPEG’s, AVI’s, ASF / WMV / WMA, MP4, MOV, 3GP, Matroska format (MKV), Real (from RealPlayer), Wav (including DTS), Raw Audio: DTS, AAC, AC3, A52. Raw DV, FLAC, FLV (Flash), MXF, Nut, Standard MIDI / SMF, Creative™ Voice.

For a complete detailed list of features check here.

How does it look? Like I said, simple, organized, lightweight.

Yes, you can also load subtitles into it, or just drop the srt file into the same directory with the same filename as the video and will automatically play it along :-)

You have a ton of features, like choosing the audio track (if the file you’re playing has more than one), audio channels, you can open a folder (with VOB’s in it, for example), Open a Disc, Open a Network Stream of even Capture from a Device, like webcam or a TV-Card. Yup, you can watch TV through it too. Just go to File – Open Capture Device. IT IS that simple. It’s the beauty of this player, it’s not because it has a highly customizable interface, it’s because it’s simply organized, fully featured and never stops working (never did in my case and I’m using it for years anyways). You can even put a video playing in background (as wallpaper).

Check it out if you’re looking for a decent player and get rid of all those codec packs which are literally a waste. One player for everything, this is it.

Oh, and by the way, it’s for Windows, they have packages for almost all Linux distributions, *BSD, Solaris, Android, and even OS/2 (just when we though they were left behind).
